Observatory for water accidents
Annual report: Observatory for water accidents in Greece in 2023:
Safe Water Sports has etsablished in cooperation with the State the ''Observatory for accidents'' which allows for the accurate recording of data related to drownings and accidents at sea and internal waters (polls, lakes, rivers etc) in cooperation with the Hellenic Coast Guard and the Hellenic Police respectively.
The Organization has udnertakes the statistical analysis of data of the Observatory, in order to plan the national policy for supporting prevention activities amining at the continuous reduction of loss of life.
At Sea:

During the period 2020–2024, an average of 353 people lose their lives each year during recreational activities.

In 2024, there were 10 fewer fatal accidents compared to 2023.

8 out of 10 people lose their lives at sea due to drowning.
-
83% of those who die at sea are over the age of 60.
-
64% of people who die at sea are Greek nationals.
-
In 2024, 66% of fatal accidents occurred at beaches that were "unmonitored" by a lifeguard.

In 2023, 87% of fatal accidents occurred at a beach listed in the National Beach Registry.
In Inland Waters:

During the period 2020–2024, an average of 4 people lose their lives each year during recreational activities.

56% of fatal accidents in inland waters occur in hotel swimming pools.

41% of people who die during recreational activities are aged 18–59.

2023
