What we have achieved
Since our establishment we have achieved the following:
- In 2015, 80% of water sports and recreational activity businesses operated without a licence and, therefore, could not be inspected by the Port Authorities. Today, 100% are legally licensed and regularly inspected.
- The number of lifeguards on beaches has increased by 44%, while the percentage of lifeguard positions filled has risen from 50% to 97%.
- The number of inspections conducted by the Port Authorities has increased fivefold, reaching approximately 15,000 inspections annually, thanks to the Information System donated by Safe Water Sports.
- From 2016 to 2026, more than 250,000 children have received water-safety information and training at school. Before 2015, no similar initiative existed in Greece.
- We created the first educational programme on safety in swimming pools, at sea and during water sports activities.
- The first Safe Swimming Programme was developed for swimming pools and for schools offering swimming lessons to third- and fourth-grade pupils. More than 18,000 certificates have been awarded to children who successfully completed a swimming level.
- We created Ocean Lab, the first educational and interactive centre to welcome students free of charge and teach them about sea safety, water sports and swimming through technology-based games.
- We established the first Accident and Drowning Observatory in Greece and Cyprus. In cooperation with the Port Authorities and the Police, it records detailed information on all incidents occurring in each country’s aquatic environment. The Observatory’s first report, covering the period from 2017 to 2020, was published in 2021, while the first report for Cyprus was presented in 2026.
- We created the first pan-European certification standard for water sports businesses.
- 500 beaches across Greece now display the special swimmer-safety signage developed by Safe Water Sports.
- Information centres operate on beaches every summer, offering children free access to water-safety activities and educational material.
- Greece became the first country in the world to establish a National Day for the Prevention of Drownings and Marine Accidents, observed annually on 11 May.
- The first summer awareness campaign aimed specifically at older adults is being implemented in cooperation with the Ministry of Health and the National Public Health Organization.
- Safety measures at sea and during recreational water activities have been strengthened through multiple legislative initiatives involving several ministries.
Every year, we reach and inform:
- 700,000 people through social media platforms, including Facebook, Instagram and X/Twitter.
- 5,500 students at Ocean Lab, the Organization’s educational centre.
- 100,000 new users through the Safe Water Sports app and website.
- Children and adults through 3,000 television broadcasts of educational and awareness videos.
- The public through the distribution of 50,000 information leaflets on national roads and through ferry companies.
- Travellers through targeted initiatives at Athens International Airport “Eleftherios Venizelos”, Fraport Greece, Aegean Airlines and Blue Star Ferries.
