Presentation of the Safe Water Sports Educational Program at Stavros Niarchos Foundation Cultural Center
In the presence of the President of the Hellenic Republic, Mr. Prokopios Pavlopoulos, the presentation of the Safe Water Sports educational program about safety in the sea and water that was coorganized by the Non-Profit Organization and Stavros Niarchos Foundational Cultural Center, was carried out with a great success on Friday, March 16, 2018, in the packed Lighthouse of the SNFCC.
The event, which was coordinated by Mr. Panos Karvounis, ex Head of the Representation of the European Commission in Greece and present Special Advisor to Pierre Moscovici, European Commissioner for Economic and Legal Affairs, is part of a network that consists of actions in a national level performed by Safe Water Sports, with a central message "Never again a loss of a life in the sea and in the water". These actions plan to inform and raise awareness of citizens regarding safety in the sea and water and to reduce the number of incidents which unfortunately are recorded each year in Greece.
The President of the Republic Mr. Prokopios Pavlopoulos, the Deputy Minister of Shipping and Island Policy Nektarios Santorinios, the Vice President of the political party, New Democracy, Adonis Georgiades, the Chief of General Staff Nikolaos Tsounis, representatives of the Coast Guard Corps, Church, local government, Olympic Champions and Champions in the sea and water sports, volunteers who support action, teachers and parents, they all attended the presentation of the program which, with the approval of the Ministry of Education, Research and Religious Affairs, teaches Primary and Secondary School children about safety in the water.
The President of the Republic Mr. Prokopios Pavlopoulos highlighted: "The educational program addresses at parents and school and it should be given to children from the beginning of their education. This program has the same importance as the importance of sea to Greece, and Safe Water Sports effort needs to be accompanied with the strongest support because it helps the State, and the Constitution owes to fully protect the childhood - but it fails to do that because of the crisis. "
The Deputy Minister of Shipping and Island Policy, Mr. Nektarios Santorinios mentioned: "In the country with 13,676 km of coastline, which is the largest in Europe, where there are recorded about 300 deaths in the sea, Safe Water Sports is of great importance and should be supported. Regarding the education of our children, the cooperation with the Coast Guard and the approval by the Ministry of Education, Research and Religious Affairs takes off the "Be aware - Learn - Care" program and contributes to what our common goal should be. Do not lose any human life in the sea again."
The Vice President of the political party, New Democracy, Mr. Adonis Georgiades noted, among other things: "I have been using Safe Water Sports app on my mobile for over a year now. Many parents, like me, use it a lot in order to search for safe beaches for our children and we feel thankful for that. This is an excellent initiative."
The Commander and Chief of the Port Police, Mr. Vassilis Mammis, carried the message of the Captain of the Coast Guard Mr. Panayiotis Paraskevas, where, among other things, he highlighted: "The cooperation between the Coast Guard and Safe Water Sports is built under strong foundations. Citizens' acceptance is constantly strengthening the will to develop new activities and initiatives in order to approach the goal of reducing or even better try to disappear the accidents during water sports.''
The President of Safe Water Sports and instigator of this voluntary initiative, Mr. Panagiotis Paschalakis, said: "About three years ago, we started with several difficulties and we did not imagine we could reach our present goals. Now our vision is for the Organization to grow, even beyond borders, as our initiative is unique throughout Europe. I would like to thank all the members of Safe Water Sports, the Greek Olympic Champions and athletes, the volunteers who help us, the Stavros Niarchos Foundation Cultural Center for its cooperation in the organization of the current presentation, the Ministry of Shipping and Island Policy, the Coast Guard for the flawless collaboration but also the Ministry of Education, Research and Religious Affairs that recently approved our program. In 2017, in cooperation with the Coast Guard, the Organization informed about 35,000 students and by 2018 we plan to educate 50,000 children each year. Our common goal is that no human loss will be lost again in the water. "
For this event, Nicolas Kaklamanakis represented all Greek Olympic Champions who voluntarily support Safe Water Sports,
while Despina Margiolaki, senior student in the fourth year of the School of Physical Education and Sport of the Kapodistrian University who is specialized in wet athletics, presented a very interesting study by the school of physical education and sports regarding the causes of accidents in the water and the sea.
The presentation of the Safe Water Sports educational program, through the use of audio-visual material, was completed by the student of the Greek High School, Velissario Christodoulou.
